Gum San Educational Brochure
Gum San is a valuable educational and cultural resource for both teachers and students of all levels and learning abilities.
Major topics explored include:
The discovery of gold at the Canton Lead, one of the world's richest shallow alluvial goldfields.
The establishment of the city of Ararat. The only known Australian town to be settled by the Chinese.
The influence of the Chinese people on Australia's cultural development.
The VELS strands, domains and dimensions are the guideline for the centre's activities and program.
They include the following dimensions and standards:
Civic knowledge and understanding Level 3–6
Creating and making Level 1–4
Reading Level 3–6
Writing Level 3–6
Speaking and listening Level 1–6
Historical knowledge and understanding Level 1–3 basic introduction, Level 4–6
Historical reasoning and interpretation Level 5–6
Intercultural knowledge and language awareness Level 1-4
Science at Work Level 4-6
Listening, viewing and responding Level 1–6
Reasoning, processing and inquiry Level 1-6
Creativity Level 1-4

To assist with the quality of the learning experience, education groups will be provided with the services of a centre guide(s) and program based on the VELS. The program consists of appropriate interactive activities especially designed by an experienced education consultant for the level and ability of your group. Project sheets can be supplied for levels 4 - 6 and activity sheets for levels 1- 4. A craft option is also available for levels 1 - 4 at an extra charge.

A Full Day Program
For primary schools can be arranged including a tour, craft activities and work sheets and a Chinese lunch (optional) This program caters for a maximum of 90 students at one time. Cost ranges from $7 to $17. Reservations need to be made well in advance as this program depends on the availability of the Great Hall, which can be heavily booked.
Group Numbers
A maximum of 50 students can attend the centre at any one time. Groups of 50 will be split into smaller organised groups to ensure a quality experience. It is recommended 1 ½ hours to 2 hours be allowed for a visit. The maximum for the full day program is 90 (4 – 4 ½ hours).
Supervision
The recommended ratio is one adult to ten students.

Lunch
Although there are no catering facilities or food outlets on site, a Chinese lunch can be arranged in the Great Hall at Gum San. This facility is heavily booked, so groups wishing to avail themselves of this venue must book early to ensure their preferred date.
The nearby Alexandra Park, with its magnificent gardens, tree lined walks, bright flowerbeds and lawns leading down to an ornamental lake, toilet facilities, play equipment and plenty of space to stretch your legs, is a wonderful place for lunch. The Centre courtyard and lawns are also available.
Gift Shop
The shop caters for children and adults with Chinese cultural souvenirs priced from $1.00
Opening Hours
The Gum San Chinese Heritage Centre is open daily from 10.00am - 4.30pm. Earlier opening can be organised by prior arrangement.
